So my roomie and I saw Spiderman 3 today. I’d heard good things and bad things, but I tried to go in with an open mind; the first two were really good, so I was crossing my fingers that this one would be just as awesome. Angel, of course, went in with an idolizing state of mind.

Overall, I liked it. It did feel like they tried to pack too much in, and indeed, they did (see also Wikipedia article). What ruined it the most for me–and perhaps this is due to having read some scoffing beforehand–were the things that weren’t really meant to be amusing, but that I found humorous anyway. No examples, since I don’t want to get spoilerific (and I tend to forget details right away, anyway).

There were a number of small children at the movie, and at the point where Marko’s just woken up after becoming Sandman (ie made entirely of sand), one of the ones sitting behind us made a very reasonable observation.

And later, at one of the climactic moments, I had to ruin it for Angel in order to make this comment.

(For those of you who don’t know, I burp regularly and well.)

I’m generally a DC (and Batman) fangirl by nature, so of course when I see Sandman, I immediately think, “Clayface ripoff!” And indeed, upon researching it, I discover I am right: the version of Clayface most of us are familiar with was first seen in 1961, whereas Sandman was invented two years later, in 1963. On the other hand, DC ripped off Kraven the Hunter and Namor from Marvel, so it kinda evens out. (Those are just the two we could think of off the tops of our heads, but I’m sure there’s an assload more rippage in one direction or the other.)

Oh yeah, and they cut the line of Mary Jane’s that was in the trailer, something along the lines of “we’ve all done terrible things to one another, but we have to forgive each other.” <hates when movies cut lines from the trailers> The thing is, I’m not even sure where that line would have gone… a whole missing scene maybe?
