Archive: ‘character design’ tag

Roomie saw Yorkshire pudding on TV yesterday and was intrigued (though he had no clue what it was), so I made some for the first time, and they came out quite well. Today I’m on my own for dinner, so I’m making a second batch, but some are toad in the hole (such an American dinner for 4th of July, I know).

So I tinkered with it more today; much more finished-looking. I like it a lot better, but as a permanent style? Probably not so much. I dunno. Poking around at style for me is like going clothes shopping: nothing quite fits. I have a drawing style (I mean really, how hard is that? it’s how I draw), but not a finished art style. Of course, that’s probably cuz I’m so lazy about doing finished pieces, buuut… I mean, I’m getting better, right?

The inking’s fairly crap (as are some of the shadow shapes), but psh. Practice makes perfect.

Still playing with blacks. I dunno, they don’t feel quite me yet. They look a bit like I’ve been reading too much BPRD lately, which I have. Eh, I’ll keep poking at em.

EDIT: So originally I had her fully colored, and then I turned off the color layer and realized it looked better without. Added skin color at 100% and a few 30% tints of the original colors, and now I’m better pleased with the blacks. (I guess I was channeling Dave Stewart for colors? o.o Far less BPRD now.) Sort of Ashley Wood-ish* palette currently, but oh well.

* I have also lately been reading things of his. Speaking of which, Zombies vs. Robots and its sequel, Zombies vs. Robots vs. Amazons (nsfw, that latter one) are quite good.

smoker!

I tried to do a repeat of the shiny painted-looking one from yesterday, but took it a little farther, which may have been too much. I dunno, it’s ok. Pretty, but not quite my thing, I guess?

My brain died after I finished this. XD

Little over an hour of Photoshop ink + paint.

I kind of like the painterly-ish look with the faded ink lines, though to be honest it was a happy accident. Her shirt was originally green and I painted over it, leaving a little halo of darker color, which worked nicely as an outline. Then I fiddled with the line art to match.

I love my new icon, even if it did end up being pink and purple. Cuttlefish = ♥. Photoshop ink & color from some scribbles I did a few months back.

Dethklok tomorrow night! :D

Also possibly going to see The Fall earlier in the day. I’ve heard mixed things about it, but as long as it’s as pretty as The Cell (of which I have no doubt), I’ll be happy.

So I decided it was finally time I got off my arse and post my character design final from last semester.

I was told (by a classmate, not the professor) their eyes look vacuous without pupils… which may or may not be valid, but then how does one explain HergĂ© getting away with Tintin, hmm? :3 I was also told that the nose doesn’t work, but psht! I like it. It may bear a slight resemblance to Rygel’s nose on Farscape, but that’s a very minor detail.

And in case anyone’s wondering, the original drawings were done by hand and then I inked/colored in Flash. This is partially because I’m fond of vector graphics (easy editing), and partially because Flash’s stroke-smoothing feature is very, very nice, especially without having CS3 yet.
